BATE Borisov and PSV have never met in Europe.
BATE Borisov have met Dutch opposition in two different encounters, both in the 2010/11 Europa League group stage. Alkmaar-based AZ responded to a 4-1 away defeat at BATE with a 3-0 home victory over these opponents.
PSV met Shakhter Soligorsk in the play-off round of the 2014/15 Europa League. The Eindhoven-based club won 1-0 at home and then 2-0 away.
The four matches mentioned above are the only European encounters involving teams from both Netherlands and Belarus.
BATE Borisov
BATE Borisov made it to this stage by eliminating Finland's HJK 2-1 on aggregate in qualifying round 2 and Azerbaijan's Qarabag FK 2-1 on aggregate in qualifying round 3.
BATE Borisov reached the Champions League main tournament on five previous occasions and on all five they had to overcome three rounds of qualifying. No team in Europe has performed that feat this often as BATE.
Four of those five seasons came after the introduction of the play-off round in 2009/10. BATE are a perfect 4-from-4 in play-off round ties, disposing of Sturm Graz (2011/12), Hapoel Ironi (2012/13), Slovan Bratislava (2014/15) and Partizan Beograd (2015/16).
BATE Borisov have been involved in 64 matches in CL qualification. Only two teams in Europe have featured in more: Croatia's Dinamo Zagreb (80) and Moldova's FC Sheriff (66).
BATE Borisov have been involved in 32 two-legged knockout ties in CL qualification, prevailing in 24 and being eliminated in eight.
BATE Borisov is the only club that has represented Belarus in the CL main competition. In five previous participations they never made it past the group stage. On four occasions they finished bottom of their group.
BATE Borisov are table leaders in the Belarusbank-Vysshaya Liga and are in search of their 13th consecutive Belarusian domestic league title. Their current run of 12 (2006-2017) is the longest active streak of domestic league titles in the world. Only three European teams produced longer runs: Gibraltar's Lincoln (14 from 2003 to 2016), Latvia's Skonto Riga (14 from 1991 to 2004) and Norway's Rosenborg BK (13 from 1992 to 2004).
PSV
PSV are in search of a 16th participation in the Champions League main competition. Their current total of 15 leads all Dutch clubs, while Ajax are trying to clinch their 14th berth in the current qualifying cycle.
PSV are the reigning Dutch domestic champions and the first since 1993 to not receive a direct berth into the CL group stage. In 1993/94, Dutch champions Feyenoord failed to make the grade as they were eliminated by FC Porto. In 1992/93, the first season of the Champions League, Dutch champions PSV successfully negotiated two rounds of qualifying, against Lithuania's Zalgiris Vilnius and Greece's AEK, to reach the group stage.
The last time Netherlands had two teams in the CL main competition was in 2010/11 (then: Ajax and FC Twente). This season, PSV and Ajax can still qualify for the CL group stage.
As a player, current PSV head coach Mark van Bommel featured in the CL main competition in 12 different seasons. Among Dutch players, only three have featured in more: Arjen Robben (16, could become 17 this season), Clarence Seedorf (13) and Wesley Sneijder (13).
Van Bommel could join Phillip Cocu as the only two persons to have represented PSV in the CL main competition both as a player and a head coach.
PSV are one of the former winners of the Champions Cup/Champions League. In 1987/88 they won the trophy before the Champions League era had begun.
PSV have featured in seven two-legged knockout ties in CL qualification. They prevailed in each of their first six, but were eliminated in their most recent tie in CL qualification, by AC Milan in the play-off round in 2013/14.
