UEFA Champions League 2021/22

Update: The club has recently announced that they completed the FFP period with UEFA successfully. After 4 full seasons, Gala is now available to pay transfer fees without selling players first.

Among 5 presidential candidates the sharpest one got elected last weekend in an historical election, and our coach Terim is back on training facilities as of today. The main investor & president of Fortuna Sittard was also elected as a board member responsible of football branch, and he's expected to work on transfers and financial materials from now on.

The next 2-3 weeks will be extremely important to complete the squad list for the PSV games. Whatever the outcome of this process, PSV are the favourites to advance.

PS: Hoping that you can sell Malen & Dumfries before the knock-out games :) Personally rooting for Italy in Euro 2020, but the Dutch NT also looked solid although they haven't played with a strong opponent.

Gala fan here, hope you don't mind I don't write in Dutch! Obviously choosing the PSV legend as a nickname who helped Galatasaray win a legendary championship back in 2006.

Though it hurts me saying this, PSV are the absolute favourites of this draw. As of today, Gala only has 13 first-team players under contract excluding the GKs. There are no players in many positions, like the contracts of 3 left-back players expired by late June. Transfermarkt will most likely update the roster after July 1st. Of course the squad will get better by late July, but PSV will still be the better side realistically speaking. The club will have a presidential elections in four days, and IMO only one candidate might bring what it takes to beat PSV.

The best case will still be a long shot. In any case there won't be enough time to bring a quality squad together in less than one month.

The stadium of Galatasaray is having a complete pitch upgrade, it's likely the second game will be played at another stadium.

Currently the first team doesn't have a coach, but there's this candidate who will bring back Fatih Terim, the legendary coach for Gala and Turkey. He has a lot of experience in two-legged ties, and never lost with Gala in UCL qualifiers. In one of those years, he managed to win UEFA Cup beating teams like Milan, Dortmund, Leeds and Arsenal. Other presidential candidates are talking about bringing unexperienced managers instead of Terim.

The most recent president and his crew was keen on loaning players due to the FFP regulations while selling the best players on roster (Gomis, Fernando Reges, Ozan Kabak), and that caused a lot of instability in squad and results in last 2 years. This will change with the new president, but they will have less than 4 weeks to take over and build a squad.

For those looking at Gala 20/21 squad, I can say who's coming back and who's not:

GK: Muslera (Uruguayan legend)
RB: Yedlin (USMNT first choice), Linnes - Ozbayrakli not coming back.
LB: Saracchi not coming back, Bayram - Tasdemir are rotation players and will renew contracts. A good-enough left back will be signed before PSV games.
CB: Marcao, Luyindama. Donk is getting older, and his contract is expired & he might not come back. Alpaslan Ozturk was recently announced as a free transfer. Both Ozturk and Luyindama played in Belgian League.
DM: Taylan (versatile player who can use both feet, good passer), Etebo not coming back. They will probably bring a better player here since they've suffered a lot in last two seasons after Fernando Reges.
CM: Kilinc (a winger player turned to Mezzala), Aytac Kara (strong player who's good with long passes). Gedson might come back if Terim is coming back. Akbaba stays. They will probably try to sign 1 or 2 players here.
RM: Feghouli is expected to leave if they can find another club matching his high salary. Akturkoglu (the next Ribery?) is the man. Caglayan (pressing forward) is a rotation player.
LW: Babel was playing quite good in the last season. Turan helps as a substitute player, and also can play as attacking midfielder. It's likely Onyekuru will be bought from Monaco after the elections.
ST: Mostafa Mohamed (might be the best sensational player in next years for Egyptians after Mo Salah), Falcao is injury prone. Dervisoglu will probably come back with Terim.

The club is trying to get rid of players over 30 with high salary (Falcao, Feghouli, Diagne, Babel) and trying to sign youngsters or free players. It's been 2 years since the last time the club paid a transfer fee due to FFP regulations.

Before the PSV games, the fans are expecting at minimum;
  • 1 RB,
  • 1 LB,
  • 1 CB,
  • 1 DM,
  • 2 CM / AMC,
  • 1 RM
  • 1 striker if the club can sell Falcao or Diagne.

I will try to give better information as the new management takes over and starts rebuilding the squad for CL qualifiers.

Good luck!
