General preview

No team will qualify or be eliminated on Matchday 3
Matchday 3 this season will bring no decisions in terms of qualification or elimination.

In theory, it is possible to qualify for the next round after three matchrounds, but it requires a 6-2-1-1 points distribution in the group after two matchrounds. That is currently not the case in any of the eight groups.

None of the 67 CL campaigns that started the (first) group stage with three consecutive victories failed to qualify for the next round and none of the five that started the second group phase with three straight wins did.

Of the 61 CL campaigns that started with three successive defeats only one recovered to reach the next round. This was achieved by Newcastle United in the (first) group phase in 2002/03. None of the three campaigns that started the second group phase with three straight defeats managed to recover.

Driver's seat for teams that win first two
Of the 120 CL campaigns that started with two victories, only 10 failed to survive the group phase. The 110 that punched their ticket represent a 92% success rate.

Spartak Moskva and Rangers were the victims twice, crashing out in the group phase after starting with two victories in 1998/99 and 2010/11 and 2000/01 and 2007/08 respectively.

The most recent casualties were BATE Borisov in 2012/13.

Thirteen of the 26 CL winners started off their campaign with two victories. Following the 2008/09 season, only Real Madrid have managed this, in 2013/14, 2015/16 and last season.

Teams that lose their first two find themselves in peril
Losing the first two matches of a CL campaign is something a team can barely afford. Of the 114 campaigns that failed to register a point in their first two matches 104 went out in the group phase. This comes down to 91%.

Of the 10 teams that turned the tide after losing their first two, two managed the feat after the 2010/11 season. Galatasaray achieved that in 2012/13 and pushed on to the quarterfinals, the best ever finish in the competition by a side that dropped their first two. In 2015/16, Arsenal reached the Last 16 after losing their first two in 2015/16.

Messi looks to break one of Ronaldo's CL scoring records
Lionel Messi has made a flying start to this Champions League season. He started this campaign on 100 goals in the main competition and by scoring five in the first two matchrounds he has raised that total to 105.

He has scored all 105 for FC Barcelona and has equalled Cristiano Ronaldo's CL record for most goals for a single club. The Portuguese scored 105 for Real Madrid and another 15 for Manchester United, to make him the competition's all-time leading goalscorer. He has yet to score in the CL for current club Juventus.

In 2016/17, Messi had scored six goals after three matchdays. The record number of goals by one player at that stage is seven, by Filippo Inzaghi (2002/03) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2013/14).

Messi already holds the record for most career goals in CL group stage matches. His 65 leads Cristiano Ronaldo's 60 by five.

Like father, like son
With the Champions League having started in 1992/93, a next generation of players is emerging more than 25 years later.

On matchday 2, Justin Kluivert scored his first goal in the competition. He is the son of Patrick Kluivert, who scored the winning goal in the 1994/95 final.

The Kluiverts became the third father-son combination to both have scored in the Champions League.

The first at that were the Ayews. Father Abedi Pelé contributed to Olympique de Marseille winning the inaugural Champions League in 1992/93. Later, both sons André and Jordan scored for the same club in the competition.

Zlatko Zahovic was one of the most prolific marksmen in the competition around the turn of the century and is still Slovenia's all-time leading goalscorer in the Champions League. In September 2014, son Luka scored his first CL goal, for domestic side NK Maribor.

There is more offspring waiting in the wings. Just as an example, Timothy Weah, George's son, is under contract with Paris Saint-Germain, but has yet to make his Champions League debut.

Head-to-Head
PSV and Tottenham Hotspur previously met in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup fourth round.

On 6 March 2008, PSV won 1-0 at White Hart Lane thanks to a Jefferson Farfán goal.

The return in Eindhoven, on 12 March 2008, finished in a 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur away win (Dimitar Berbatov goal). PSV eventually won the penalty shoot-out 6-5 and reached the quarterfinals in which they lost to Fiorentina (3-1 on aggregate).

PSV have a W4-D2-L3 record in their CL home matches against English opposition. They won their most recent one, 2-1 versus Manchester United on 15 September 2015.

Spurs remained unbeaten against FC Twente in the 2010/11 CL group stages, their only previous CL meetings with a Dutch team. They won 4-1 at home and drew 3-3 in Enschede.

Spurs have a W5-D1-L2 record in their European away fixtures against Dutch sides.

Heurelho Gomes, Eidur Gudjohnsen, Edson Rolando, Hans Segers and Lee Young-Pyo played for both teams.

Moussa Sissoko played together with Luuk de Jong at Newcastle United in 2014. Nick Viergever played with Mousa Dembélé at AZ (2010) and with Davinson Sánchez at Ajax (2016-2017).

PSV
PSV can become the fourth Dutch team to lose their first three matches of a Champions League campaign, after Willem II in 1999/2000, sc Heerenveen in 2000/01 and Feyenoord in 2017/18.

PSV are winless in their last 10 CL fixtures (W0-D4-L6), since a 2-1 group stage win at home against CSKA Moskva on 8 December 2015. This is already the longest winless streak by a Dutch team in the CL.

Only Club Brugge (4) and Lokomotiv Moskva (4) recorded fewer shots on target in the first two matchrounds than PSV (5).

PSV have conceded 44 shot attempts this CL season. Only Crvena Zvezda (53) conceded more shot attempts in the first two matchrounds.

PSV have used 14 different players in their first two CL matches this campaign, fewest of all teams.

Pablo Rosario can become the first player to score in successive CL matches of PSV since Danny Koevermans in October 2008.

The last PSV players to score multiple goals in a single CL campaign are Luuk de Jong (2) and Maxime Lestienne (2) in 2015/16.

Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur can become the third English side to lose their first three matches of a Champions League campaign, after Blackburn Rovers in 1995/96 and Newcastle United in 2002/03.

Spurs could lose four successive CL matches for the first time. They could also lose four in a row for the first time in all European competitions.

Spurs can lose back-to-back CL away fixtures for the first time.

Only Paris Saint-Germain (18 matches) are currently on a longer active scoring streak in the CL than Spurs (12 matches).

Harry Kane has scored in four of his previous six CL away matches (six goals in total).

Erik Lamela (1 goal, 2 assists) has been directly involved in all three CL goals by Tottenham this campaign.

Dele Alli (3 goals, 4 assists) has been directly involved in seven goals in his last six CL appearances. He provided three assists in his last two away appearances in the competition.

Son Heung-Min has made a record 15 CL appearances for Tottenham Hotspur, followed by Eric Dier (14), Hugo Lloris (14) and Christian Eriksen (13).

Eriksen could become the first player to score in three consecutive CL away matches of Spurs.

Eriksen remained unbeaten in all of his six league matches with Ajax against PSV (W4-D2-L0). He was involved in four goals in his last three league matches against PSV (1 goal/3 assist), including an assist in each of those three appearances.

FC Kaiserslautern? Het zou me niks verbazen.

Een aderlating voor Tottenham Hotspur: verdediger Jan Vertonghen is tot december uit de roulatie, wegens een hamstringblessure.

:bandage: Jan in de lappenmand. We zullen hem niet missen. :D

:sneaky:
