- NK Osijek beat PSV 1-0 in Eindhoven on 27 July, in these teams' first ever meeting. Borna Barisic scored a 57th-minute penalty for the visitors.
- PSV have faced Croatian opposition once before in Europe. In the 2013/14 Europa League group stage, they drew 0-0 away and won 2-0 at home against Dinamo Zagreb.
- Forty years ago, when Croatia was part of Yugoslavia, PSV also played a two-legged match-up against Hajduk Split. PSV lost 2-0 away and won 3-0 (after extra time) at home in the 1975/76 Champions Cup quarterfinals.

- PSV are currently on a nine-match winless run in Europe (D4-L5). The last time they recorded a victory was on 8 December 2015, when they beat CSKA Moskva 2-1 at home in the Champions League group stage.
- PSV's current streak of nine matches without a win is their second-longest winless run ever in European competition. Between 1992 and 1995, PSV remained winless in 11 consecutive European matches (D4-L7).
- Away from home, PSV are winless in their last nine European matches (D4-L5), since the 3-2 Europa League group stage victory at Panathinaikos on 6 November 2014.
- Luuk de Jong is PSV's European top scorer in their current squad with seven goals. Current manager Phillip Cocu scored eight goals in Europe for PSV.
